[Expressions of interest due by 7 December] The University of Oxford’s Bodleian Library has launched a competition to design new seating

Thought to be one of the oldest libraries in Europe, the organisation is seeking a ‘new icon’ chair for its soon-to-be refurbished Weston Library.

British designers will be expected to team up with manufatcturers to propose ‘a future classic’ which also meets the basic needs of its users.

Richard Ovenden, deputy to Bodley’s librarian, said: ‘This competition is an exciting opportunity to create an iconic chair design.  This new chair will be a key element in the Weston Library, and this major project in the University will become a key resource for scholars and will enhance public access to the Bodleian’s collections.

‘Chairs are of great importance to researchers – sitting in these chairs, scholars working in the Weston will make great discoveries, find new knowledge and make major contributions to our intellectual life.’
