New inpatients building for St George’s Mental Health Trust, London

[Registration must be completed by 19 August] RIBA and South West London and St George’s Mental Health Trust have launched a design competition for a new inpatients building

With a brief to provide a place of ‘mental healing’, the competition seeks designs which move away from conventional ‘prescriptive’ solutions.

Proposals must include quality outdoor spaces and high quality finishes with the aim to create a sense of ‘comfort and value’ for users.

The trust currently cares for 18,000 patients. Recent South West London and St George’s Mental Health Trust extensions such as the Phoenix Unit and Wandsworth Recovery Centre have won design awards.

A site for the new inpatients building will be allocated early 2012.
