Masterplanner sought for jumbo Wales University campus overhaul

The University of Wales, Trinity St David is on the hunt for a masterplanner for a major overhaul of its property portfolio

The newly-formed university is seeking an architect-led, multi-disciplinary team to oversee the redevelopment of its Lampeter, Carmarthen and Swansea campuses.

The high-profile project follows last year’s merger of Swansea Metropolitan University with the University of Wales, based in Lampeter, and Trinity University College, based in Carmarthen.

The appointed architect will win outline planning consent for a brand new 4.5 hectare campus for the university and a 3 hectare ‘leisure quarter’ within the Swansea Docks regeneration zone.

Known as SA1 Swansea Waterfront, the large-scale brownfield regeneration is expected to host more than 2,000 new homes alongside 65,000m² of office space and 23,200m² of institutional facilities.

The chosen masterplanner will also oversee the reconfiguration and disposal of the university’s existing premises at Mount Pleasant, Townhill, and Ty Bryn Glas in Swansea.

A high-level review by the chosen team will meanwhile identify options to rationalise and redevelop the university’s bases in Carmarthen and Lampeter.

Full planning permission will also be required for a variety of new buildings on the Swansea Docks campus where the winning team will develop a design code.

The successful tenderer will be expected to work with the university to meet Wales’ mandatory target to use BIM Level 2 on all publicly-funded projects by 2016.

The contract will be worth up to £400,000 excluding VAT and is expected to run from late June until July next year.

The deadline for requests to participate is 2 June.
