International design contest launches for Mumbai museum

An international competition has launched to extend Mumbai’s Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum

The museum will be extended by 10,000m² through a new wing intended to house touring exhibitions, an interpretation centre, library and public amenities.

Mumbai’s oldest museum, the Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum opened in 1855, and its current renovation won a 2005 UNESCO Conservation Award.

The two stage contest, launched by Malcolm Reading Consultants will be decided in March 2014, with work on site due to start in October 2014.

Reading said: ‘We will be looking for very creative teams with expertise in contemporary design and landscaping as the museum stands in one of the few green spaces in south Mumbai.‘

The contest will open in December 2013 with a full brief to be released through the organiser’s page.
