Vienna’s ‘District Two’ regeneration zone has opened an international ideas competition for an 80,000m² expansion
Open to students and professionals, the contest seeks proposals for two mixed-use extensions on separate sides of the Austrian capital’s Krieau Race Track.
The first 37,000 m² development plot will feature 70,000 m² of mixed-use space in buildings ranging from 12 to 35 metres in height.
The second 44,000 m² site will include 130,000 m² of residential and office space in buildings ranging from 28 to 120 metres in height.
Located next to the Vienna University of Economics, the area is expected to host an additional 1,000 apartments, 50,000m² of office space and 300 student flats by 2021.
At its centre is the historic Krieau arena which is thought to be Europe’s second oldest harness racing track.
Since 2009 around 80,000m² of office space has been completed in District Two. Key tenants include Unilever, Xerox and rail freight operator DB Schenker.
The contest winner will take home £2,500 while second place will receive £800 and third place will be awarded £400.
The deadline for submissions is 8 August
