The University of Newcastle upon Tyne is on the hunt for an architect for a £30 million teaching centre. Planned to open in 2017, the new building is the latest addition to the city’s 10 hectare Science City development and will feature lecture theatres, offices and teaching rooms [Deadline for requests to participate 22 September]

An open ideas competition has been launched to design 20 ‘cost effective, green and beautiful’ self-build homes on a 2,000m² urban site. Organised by the National Custom & Self-Build Association, the contest is judged by Kevin McCloud and features a £5,000 prize fund [Deadline for submissions 19 September]

The 2014 Schindler Award for students – featuring a £90,000 prize fund – has opened for entries. Open to undergraduates and masters students, the anonymous contest seeks ideas to boost accessibility and mobility within new developments in Shenzhen, China [Deadline for registration 15 November]
