A new BFI film centre on London’s South Bank, a sea life institute at St Andrews and a 10km stretch of Italian highway; the insider’s pick of this week’s top competitions
The British Film Institute (BFI) has launched its search for an architect to design an ‘ambitious’ new South Bank film centre in London. The project, understood to be worth £160 million, is for the Hungerford car park site behind the National Theatre. A shortlist is expected to be unveiled in August with the winner appointed in November 2010. The deadline for entries is 14 June.
The University of St Andrews needs a design team for the £30 million refurbishment of its Scottish Oceans Institute. The scope of the project is unbounded but will include refurbishment of the 4,200m2 Gatty Marine Laboratory and the Sea Mammal Research Unit. The deadline for receipt of tenders or requests to participate is 31 May.
Italy’s Calabria region has launched an international design competition for imaginative re-uses for a soon-to-be-decommissioned 10km stretch of highway. The ‘zero emissions’ Solar Park South project is open to architects, landscape architects, engineers, designers, artists, scientists, researchers and students. The deadline for online registration is 15 July and top prize is 20,000 euros (£17,350).
