La Laguna market, temporary structures in Guimarães and a high speed rail link between London and the West Midlands. The editor’s pick of this week’s top competitions

The city of La Laguna in Tenerife has launched a competition to design a marketplace. The two-phase international contest seeks proposals to replace a historic market which was demolished. There is a prize fund of €47,830, with the winner also receiving a design contract. [Requests to participate must be received by 21 November]

The Portuguese city of Guimarães is looking for proposals for five temporary urban structures as part of its 2012 European Capital of Culture programme. Multi-discipline teams have been asked to consider performance and public interaction in their designs. Selected teams will receive part of a £10,400 fund to start construction, along with £870 in travel expenses. [Enrolment must be completed by 6 January]

High Speed Two Limited is seeking architectural services to support a parliamentary bill for a proposed new rail link between London and the West Midlands. Good value, environmentally acceptable designs are required, along with cost estimating services for structures along the route. [Requests to participate must be received by 3 November]
