Competitions: Editor's Pick, 24.06.10

A masterplan for ‘Mid Croydon’, new housing for Haiti and a £30 million scheme for Southend-on-Sea; this week’s round-up of top competitions

Croydon Council needs a team to draw up a spatial masterplan for ‘Mid Croydon’. The 8ha site sits between the Old Town, the town centre, Croydon College and Fairfield Halls. The council wants to address the legacy of the 1960s St George’s Walk shopping precinct, creating quality public spaces for Croydon. Pre-qualification questionnaires must be submitted by 2 July.

To tie in with a prototype housing expo in October, the Haitian government has launched a competition to help with the rebuilding programme in Haiti. Designers, architects, contractors, consultants and suppliers are encouraged to get involved with the development of alternative forms of permanent housing. The deadline for the first stage of responses is 28 June.

Southend Borough Council is seeking an architect-led design team to take forward the Elmer Square project in Southend-on-Sea. The £30 million scheme includes a library, a teaching facility for South Essex College and a research building for the University of Essex. The deadline for receipt of tenders is 26 July.
