Competitions: Editor's Pick, 24.03.11

City Garden design competition in Aberdeen, KPF/AF Student Travel Award, and a call for entries for the Open-City exhibition; the editor’s pick of this week’s top competitions

Malcolm Reading Consultants has been appointed to run the design competition by the charitable trust overseeing Aberdeen’s new City Garden Project – otherwise known as the Union Terrace Gardens contest. Aberdeen City Gardens’ Trust aims to ‘revitalise’ Aberdeen’s city centre by creating a new green setting, new civic and cultural facilities and rationalising existing road and railway links. The competition will be formally launched in April, but more information can be found on the competition website:http://thecitygardenproject.com/

Now in its seventh year, The 2011 KPF/AF Student Travel Award supports outstanding architecture students and to encourage new creative thinking by students in the field of architecture. The competition is open to all undergraduate and graduate students at architecture schools in the UK, including year out students and students graduating in 2011.  Organised by The Architecture Foundation and sponsored by Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF), the award encourages students to engage in international research. Travel awards of £1,750 and £1,250 will be awarded to two students whose projects show an outstanding insight into the possibilities of public space, building and spatial design. The deadline for submissions is 6 May 2011.

Open City, is now taking expressions of interest from practices wanting to show their work and engage with a wide audience as part of the city-wide Open House London event. To find out more about getting your recently completed projects involved, email acarroll-battaglino@open-city.org.uk. Deadline for inclusion 31 May 2011. The event runs between September 17-18.
