A design contest for St Petersburg Pier, a new visitor centre at St Albans Cathedral and regenerating Rome’s Malagrotta landfill. The editor’s pick of this week’s top competitions

St Petersburg in Florida has opened an international design competition for the £27 million overhaul of its iconic pier. The winning team will either renovate or completely rebuild the waterfront landmark. A previous competition-winning regeneration vision by Michael Maltzan was abandoned last year [Deadline for requests to participate 5 September]

The Cathedral and Abbey Church of St Alban is on the hunt for an architect to design a new £1.5 million visitor centre. The new building is part of a major redevelopment programme which will also see the chapter house transformed into a new learning space and pedestrian and vehicular access improved [Deadline for applications 10 September]

An international ideas contest has been launched to regenerate the closed Malagrotta landfill in Rome. Open to students, graduates and young architects, the contest seeks future visions for the enormous municipal landfill and its surrounding areas. The five best proposals will feature in an upcoming research publication [Deadline for submissions 15 September]
