Competitions: Editor's pick, 19.05.11

A competition to design future developments for the Helsinki South Harbour; the chance to restore an operational pottery in Stoke-on-Trent; and a contest to refurbish the University of Lancaster’s library. The editor’s pick of this week’s top competitions

The City of Helsinki has launched an open international competition for the Helsinki South Harbour area, calling for ideas to provide the basis for future development. Public urban spaces for the area must be considered as well as the improvement of pedestrian traffic and cycling connections. The winner will earn €60,000. Submissions must be made by 30 September.

The United Kingdom Historic Buildings Preservation Trust has issued a tender for the restoration of a Victorian pottery in Middleport, Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent. This includes not only the conservation of the listed buildings and the preservation of the traditional pottery-making processes but also the delivery of new workshop space, a visitor centre and heritage interpretation, offices, cafe and shop within the existing buildings. Requests to participate must be made by 15 June.

Lancaster University is seeking to appoint architects to provide design services for the refurbishment of the university’s library. The total budget for the project is estimated at £12 million (£3 million per annum) including construction, design services and VAT. Requests to participate must be made by 8 June.
