Competitions: Editor's Pick, 18.07.13

Former hospital site re-use in South Australia, a new sports campus for University College Cork and a £300 million housing contract. The editor’s pick of this week’s top competitions

[Stage one closes 28 August] The Government of South Australia is set to launch an international ideas contest for the redevelopment of the Royal Adelaide Hospital site. The hospital is due to move from the plot in 2016, allowing for the plot to be turned into a ‘recreation, entertainment and mixed-use development’. After an anonymous first stage, six entrants will be shortlisted to develop their schemes and will be paid honorariums worth £60,000. All submitted schemes will be exhibited. The three winners will share a £180,000 prize fund with the ideas expected to ‘inform’ future masterplanning options.

[Requests to participate are due 2 August] The University College Cork is searching for a design team to deliver a major new-build sports facility. The newly acquired 200,000sq m site will become home to a new pavilion with changing and spectator facilities, an indoor training block and multiple outdoor pitches. A shortlist of teams will be invited to tender based on expressions of interest, with the appointed team providing all the required consultancy services.

[Responses must be received by 8 August] Thurrock Council is on the hunt for architect’s services as part of a four year housing framework which covers both new builds and refurbishments. The authority intends to spend £100 million on revamp work with a further £200 million allocated to new build developments. The contract is divided into lots corresponding to the value of works to be carried out, below or above £5 million. Other design team professionals are also called for with most services expected from inception to completion
