A New York folly, Belfast’s Science Park and a student housing contest in Nottingham. The editor’s pick of this week’s top competitions

Socrates Sculpture Park in New York has launched a design competition looking for contemporary interpretations of the architectural folly.The winner will receive $5,000 (£3,150) to fund their project, and will also be given access to studio space for two months. The project is planned to open in July next year. [Requests to participate must be received by 16 January 2012]

Belfast’s Science Park is on the hunt for architects and other design professionals for a framework agreement. Design services are sought for the ‘innovation building’ in Fort George, with potential future projects located across Northern Ireland. The total spend under the four-year contract is estimated at £1.1 million. [Requests to participate must be received by 25 November 2011]

Insulation manufacturer Isover Saint-Gobain has launched a student ideas competition to design a ‘sustainable community’ in the Trent Basin area of Nottingham. The brief calls for entrants to design housing for 12 to 15 families along with neighbourhood services. The three best British entries will compete against international teams to decide the final three winners. [Registration should be completed by 16 December 2011]
