Competitions: Editor's Pick, 17.03.11

Repair a Stirling structure, master plan for the Plymouth College of Art, and participate in an ideas competition to find future uses for architects’ skills; the editor’s pick of this week’s top competitions

The University of Leicester is looking for an architect to repair and upgrade the roof and glazed-wall structure of its famous Stirling and Gowan-designed Engineering building. Part of Stirling’s ‘red triptych’, the Grade II*-listed faculty building has suffered from water ingress and poor insulation and requires ‘sustainability improvements’ to make it fit to last the next 50 years. John Fothergill, Department of Engineering head, said: ‘Upgrading the glass should make the roof more sustainable and will ensure that the building retains this distinguishing feature.’ The deadline for receipt of tenders is 7 April.

Plymouth College of Art is seeking a master planner and a strategic architect to advise on the initial design for the Phase One and on-going architectural advice and design services to operate on as ‘as required’ basis over a four-year period. The supplier will be required to undertake the initial design for Phase One whereupon the College intends to appoint a design and build contractor to complete the design work. The time-limit for receipt of tenders or requests to participate is 15 April, 3pm.

The Royal Society of Arts, in collaboration with the Architecture Foundation, has launched an ideas competition for architects aimed at finding future uses for the profession’s skills. The open competition aims to gather material for a ‘Day of Ideas’ which will take place later this year at the society’s headquarters in London. The best entry will receive a cash prize. The deadline for submission of entry forms, fees and work is 6.00pm GMT on Friday 8 April.
