The British Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale, Helsinki central library and the Tara Arts Theatre in south London. The editor’s pick of this week’s top competitions

The British Council has revealed its brief for architects wanting to take part in the British Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale this summer. Venice Takeaway will see 10 ‘architectural explorers’ sent abroad to reflect on gaps in UK practice. Proposals must be submitted by 10am 28 February and candidates must be free to travel in March and April.

Helsinki has launched an international design contest for a new £56 million central library. Eight proposals for the 10,000m2 site will be shortlisted. The winner will land a design contract and a share of the £90,000 prize fund. Registration must be completed by 30 March.

Tara Arts is seeking an architect-led team to design and manage the restoration of its theatre in south London. The job involves taking current plans through RIBA stages D to F and managing the construction phase which is hoped to begin in 2013. Requests to participate should be received by 8 February 2012.
