Competitions: Editor's Pick 07.10.10
The AJ’s Small Projects Awards, a facade replacement for Great Arthur House, and a design competition for a public park in Massachusettes; the editor’s pick of this week’s top competitions
The annual AJ Small Projects Awards have been launched. Small-scale architectural gems completed between 1 January 2009 and 1 November 2010 with a contract value of less than £250,000 are sought. Winners will receive a share of the £2,500 prize fund and publication in a special issue of the AJ. For the first time, a sustainability award will be given to the project with the most innovative low-carbon design. The deadline for entries is 12 November.
The City of London Corporation needs an architect-led design team to advise on replacing the facade of Great Arthur House, located on the Grade II-listed Golden Lane Estate. The team will replace the existing curtain wall system and individual windows, upgrade timber balcony doors and fanlights, redecorate the exterior and make minor concrete repairs. Pre-qualification questionnaires are due by 1 November.
A design competition has been announced to redevelop Embassy Park in Waltham, Massachusetts. The park currently suffers from undistinguished hard surfaces, large blank walls and fixed concrete furnishings, and it serves primarily as a pedestrian shortcut. Ideas are sought to transform the space and create a lively place for people to gather. The deadline for registration is 15 October and submissions must be made by 5 November.
