Helsinki bridge designs, Welsh town centre improvements and a new capital for Australia. The editor’s pick of this week’s top competitions.

An international competition has been launched asking for designs for new pedestrian, cyclist and tram bridges in Helsinki, Finland which will connect a new residential area to the city centre. The bridges fall within a designated heritage area and the budget for construction is €86 million. Prequalification submissions must be made by 3 August.

Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council has issued a tender seeking consultancy services for building improvements within Merthyr and Treharris Town Centres. Requests to participate must be made by 27 June.

The Australian Institute of Architects has launched an international design competition for ideas for a new capital of Australia. The competition asks entrants to imagine what a capital city of Australia would look like if it were to be built today. There is a total prize fund of AUD$100k up for grabs. The competition winners will be announced in March 2013, a century after the official naming of the country’s capital - Canberra.
