A monument in Leipzig, a library for the University of Kent and City University’s framework in London. The editor’s pick of this week’s top competitions

Leipzig City Council is on the hunt for architects and landscape architects to design a ‘monument to Freedom and Unity’ in the centre of the German city (pictured). Tasked with commemorating the city’s peaceful protests in 1989 that led to the fall of the Berlin Wall, the monument has a budget of €6.5 million (£5 million) and is due to start on site in July 2012. A total of €175,000 (£149,373) has been allocated to fund the competition and will be split between the prize fund and participants’ expenses. [Requests to participate must be received by 16 December 2011]

The University of Kent is seeking architectural services for a £12 million extension to its library. Design teams are also sought for a potential reconfiguration of the existing building’s layout. The contract is due to run from April 2012 to December 2015. [Tenders should be received by 9 January 2012]

City University in London is receiving expressions of interest for a three-year framework to provide architectural design services. The contract covers capital and long-term maintenance projects and may be extended a further four years if necessary. [Requests to participate must be received by 4 January 2012]
