Contest launched for £90m science museum in Moscow

[Registration should be completed before 19 November] Moscow’s Polytechnic Museum Development Foundation has launched an international design competition for a new museum and educational centre

The new museum is planned as a meeting place for the Russian and international scientific community and will host an art gallery, exhibition space and theatre. The Russian capital’s existing Polytechnic Museum will close next year for refurbishment.

International teams with experience of projects over 10,000m² are invited to apply. A shortlist of six practices will be selected for the second round with each receiving a £24,000 honorarium. A detailed brief outlining special requirements for the £90 million scheme is also available.

The 35,000m² site is anticipated to accommodate an estimated 1,370,000 visitors per annum including 40,000 students and 10,000 university staff.

International entrants must partner with a Russian organisation which is permitted to perform design works in the country.

The competition is being run by the foundation on behalf of the the city’s Polytechnic Museum and the Lomonosov Moscow State University (pictured).
