Contest launched for $33 million Winnipeg gallery extension
[Expressions of interest to be received by 4 September] Canada’s Winnipeg Art Gallery is looking for architects to design the gallery’s new Inuit Art and Learning Centre
The organisation hopes the contest for the 3,600m² four storey gallery extension will achieve a similar international response to that received by the original competition, held in the 1970s, to design the main gallery.
The proposed extension has a construction budget of $33.4 million (£21 million) with a groundbreaking ceremony expected in 2014 after the winners are selected late this year.
A short list of three to five architectural teams will be selected and interviewed to decide the commission.
Teams not registered in Manitoba will be required to form an affiliation with a local firm should they be shortlisted.
