Church of England opens seating design contest

[Submissions must be received by 30 March 2012] The Church of England has launched an open competition to find new seating designs for its 16,000 parish churches

Planned to address the needs of today’s ‘more flexible and multi-functional’ churches, the competition has been divided into two distinct categories.

The first is only open to students and recent graduates and seeks chair designs that can be built for under £100.

The second category is open to all and covers all kinds of church seating.

The competition organisers are looking for designs that meet the needs of contemporary churches while complementing the buildings’ interiors. This means the seats should be designed so that they do not damage historic floors and are lightweight and easy to store.

The winner of the first category will receive a cash prize and a chance to pitch their design to manufactures. The winning designs in the second category will be prototyped and exhibited.
