Competition launched for Bournemouth beach huts

A competition has been launched to find a team to design and build beach huts in Boscombe, near Bournemouth.

The new structures will replace five existing beach huts and will be the first in the UK designed to be accessible to disabled users.

Part of a regeneration scheme to enhance Boscombe, the huts are being funded through CABE’s national Sea Change programme. Recent schemes in Boscombe have included the construction of Europe’s first artificial surf reef and Beach Pods by designers Wayne and Gerardine Hemingway.

The competition for the £100,000 contract is open to all artists, architects and designers. The deadline for the submission of models is 26 June 2009.

For competition details go to the Bournemouth Borough Council website.
