Housebuilder Berkeley Group has an annual turnover of almost £1 billion, and builds under brands Berkeley Homes, St George Homes and St James Homes.

Managing director Tony Pidgley says: ‘[Berkeley Group] is still active – we are selling and there is an opportunity here for good design. Perhaps we have to make more of an effort now.

‘However, there is a great opportunity to buy land and we are now purchasing sites at prices that are allowing us to make great places.

‘The market is beginning to look interesting, allowing us to buy premier sites and allowing us to create better architecture.

‘We have worked with a good stable of architects but we always love seeing new blood and new ideas. That’s what makes things interesting.

‘We have made tremendous progress in terms of architecture and I think this is a chance to reach the next stage. What we need more of is partnerships, and I’d like to see more of the “old style” CABE, when they were mentors.’
