Crucible Theatre by RHWL, Sheffield (1971)

AJ Buildings Library project of the week: Opened in 1971, RHWL’s grade II listed Crucible Theatre celebrates its 40th birthday this year

The theatre continues to stage productions and host the annual World Snooker Championship, following a £15 million refurbishment completed in 2010. Later this month the awards for the RIBA Forgotten Spaces Sheffield competition will be presented at the theatre.

The Crucible is one of more than 30 theatres featured in the AJ Buildings Library, a searchable archive of images, drawings and data for exemplar projects in UK architecture. Bennetts Associates’ Stirling Prize shortlisted Royal Shakespeare Theatre sits in the Library alongside Ian Ritchie Architects’ temporary Courtyard Theatre, also in Stratford-upon-Avon.

There is also a selection of smaller venues including the AJ Small Projects-winning Jellyfish Theatre.
