Harvey Court by Levitt Bernstein
[RETROFIT AWARD PREVIEW] The refurbishment of the Grade II* listed brick student accomodation block is shortlisted in the Post War Listed Buildings category
Levitt Bernstein have carried out a complete renovation of the building envelope and facilities of the Grade II* listed building designed by Sir Leslie Martin and Patrick Hodgkinson.
The entrance has been relocated diagonally opposite its original position, a direct response to the construction of Stephen Hawking Building in 2007, whose porters’ lodge is shared with Harvey Court. This new entrance and a lift in the north-west corner provide disabled access and link the ground and first floors internally for the first time.
Improvements elsewhere include en-suite shower rooms to all bedrooms, facilities for the disabled and modernisation of communal areas, including a Junior Common Room and the breakfast room.
The terraces and podium roof have been waterproofed to rectify problems with persistent leaks that the building has suffered since it opened. The solution removed unsightly concrete paving slabs from the terraces, improved insulation and reinstated brick pavers, recreating the intended continuity between exterior surfaces and the main interior gallery concourse.
