British invasion

At the ground-breaking ceremony for Rio 2016 earlier this month, the Rio mayor’s office cited AECOM’s lead design role, referring to the multi-national practice as an English firm of designers, ‘uma impresa inglesa’.

The majority of the team deployed on the Rio Olympics is indeed based in London and riding high on its track record in delivering the London 2012 Olympic Park, but it was news to hear that California-based AECOM, with its 45,000 global work force (including approximately 1,400 architects), was perceived as British.
