Bankside Urban Forest Weekend: Urban Orchard

  • Comment

[LFA RECOMMENDED] 2 July - 4 July, Union Street

Celebrating the final weekend of London’s festival of architecture, the focus shifts to the Bankside Urban Forest Weekend, where the Union Street Urban Orchard takes a distinctly earthy centre stage.

Intended to create a place to meet, enjoy and explore, the Orchard aims to put bio-diversity hand in hand with cultural diversity. Areas to sit and admire like The Nest, a timber shelter from the Finnish Institute in London and the Tea Shed are used between games on Oliver Bishop Young’s creation Ping-Pong table in a skip, magnetic paddles provided, or a walk among the 80 fruit trees.

Attractions ranging from the livingARK, a zero carbon off the grid home, to the Scrumping Shed where long-lost cider recipes are rediscovered are scattered across the site.

This weekend’s events include discussions and demonstrations of green issues such as Brenda Parker’s research in using algae to provide energy sources and studying the bugs on site with Vanessa Celosse. Traditional techniques such as creating willow sculptures with Spencer Jenkins are taught alongside the slightly less traditional guerrilla gardening seed bombs workshop.
