Bang slang, Venturi ventures and Sci-Fi Dubai

Obervations, factoids and hearsay from the AJ's building buzz-squad

B for barmy
Antony 'Angel of the North' Gormley has told Manchester City Council it would be chicken to demolish Thomas Heatherwick's B of the Bang sculpture. The artist said Manchester should not 'lose its nerve… over the groundbreaking work', which shed a 7ft-long solid steel spike in 2005. The 150-tonne sculpture has since had nine of its 180 spikes removed. Astragal will give Gormley a B for Bravery if he makes his next announcement standing underneath the Bang.

Venturi adventure
Some architects will do anything to save their work. Robert Venturi is trying to orchestrate hoisting Lieb House, his 1968 Long Beach villa that could be bulldozed in less than a week, on to a barge and sailing it to Long Island, New York. In 1970, the New York Times described it as a 'real dumb house' - Venturi's son told the press of Atlantic City that his father embraced the word 'dumb'.
