Baking with BDP

A welcome surprise greeted guests attending BDP’s 50th birthday celebrations in the form of two very special desserts

Amid the models and display boards of the practice’s ‘BDP 61/11: Continuous Collective’ exhibition, which launched that evening in the RIBA’s Florence Hall, were the fruits of a very different kind of architectural labour: an angular chocolate cake in the shape of the 1974 Halifax Headquarters accompanied, in Victoria sponge, by the 2002 Hampden Gurney School in London.

By the time practice chairman Tony McGuirk unveiled the puddings – following the usual speeches and a trailer for the company’s ‘Five Cities, Five Places, One Day’ film by Camilla Robinson – the sound of rumbling stomachs was almost audible.

  • I tempted to say that if they had done a cake version of Preston Bus Station it would have been demolished in no time. But i wont.
