B of the Bye-Bye

Sculpture headed for scrapyard

Officially, Thomas Heatherwick’s B of the Bang is only being dismantled until it can be patched up and made safe. Unofficially, the AJ’s spies have told Astragal that the prickly sculpture in Manchester – taken down after a number of its 180 spikes fell off – is headed for the scrapyard. It seems that the council needs a ‘private benefactor’ to cough up almost £1 million in extra cash before a rebirth can even be considered, because the authority is loathe to pump any more funds into it.
