Twenty/ten is a detached house built in the garden of Oak Cottage in Cliftonwood, Bristol. Predominantly single aspect, it makes the most of northerly views to Brandon Hill and Cabot Tower, while maintaining privacy from neighbouring buildings.

A single-storey garden wall traces the site’s boundary, enclosing an L-shaped garden that frames uninterrupted views to the north and east. Tucked into the south-west corner, the house rises up from behind the wall as a bright-green rendered box, enhancing the colours of the neighbouring heavily planted garden, complementing the south-facing wooded slopes of Brandon Hill, and extending Bristol’s tradition of brightly coloured terraces.

In contrast to the generously glazed garden elevation, each remaining face is articulated by a single vertical slot. A glazed clerestory separates garden wall from elevated box, enlivening the north-facing living room with dynamic shafts of sunlight from the east, south and west. The ground floor has kitchen and snug tucked into each corner of the 10-metre long living room. This can be subdivided by screens stowed in the core that also contains a utility room, larder and stair.

Three bedrooms and a bathroom are arranged around a generous first-floor landing and five-metre high light well.
