Elm Road, Kingston by Waind Gohil Architects

[SMALL PROJECTS 2011] With the challenge of limited space to the side of the property and a small budget, the brief for this project was to reconfigure and extend a narrow detached house to provide increased living space

The solution was a 1.2m wide extension over two-storeys - constructed from a lightweight timber frame and simply detailed with western red cedar cladding and large areas of glazing - providing a new/efficient stair, artist’s studio and the enlargement of other living and bedroom areas. Key to the success of this project was the displacement of the service and storage spaces within the new extension, allowing the existing plan of the house to support open-plan living.

Start on site date November 2009
Gross floor area of extension 30m²
Form of contract JCT Homeowner’s Contract
Total cost of two-storey side extension £50,000
Client / Developer Mr and Mrs J King
Architect Waind Gohil Architects
Structural Engineer Webb Yates Engineers
Main Contrctor Bequia Ltd
