Allies and Morrison pipped to post in Indian university contest
[In pictures] Ahmedabad-based architects Vastu Shilpa Consultants has seen off competition from Allies and Morrison and Snøhetta to win the competition to masterplan the historic Nalanda University
The winning scheme was chosen for its ‘conceptual planning, clarity of thought and ability to take forward the vision of Nalanda’.
In a statement the Vastu Shilpa said: ‘We envisage Nalanda University as the campus of the future, positioned at the forefront of global education and hub of intellectual excellence.
The campus must achieve social and economic integration of the local community
‘Equally, the master plan of the campus must be an iconic beacon that attracts global attention for adopting sustainable methods to achieve social and economic integration of the local community’.
The 1,843,200m2 campus which will be made up of three elements; academic facilities, students and staff housing, and agricultural area, will eventually house a population of 7,000 students.
International multidisciplinary practice IDOM’s scheme was chosen as the runner up. The designs were produced by their London-based office.
The winning scheme was chosen from an eight strong shortlist including shortlisted Emerging Woman Architect of the Year, Amritha Ballal’s practice SpaceMatters with Snøhetta, and Allies and Morrison who had teamed up with Indian practice Hundred Hands.
Nalanda University launched the architectural competition to masterplan its campus back in November 2012. International practices were urged to team up with local Indian practices for the competition.
