AJ100 Employer of the Year

Winner: John Thompson & Partners - An award for the best employer in the AJ100, judged on staff satisfaction, workplace culture, benefits and staff turnover

During the judging, the jury - Adrian Dobson, RIBA director of practice; Lindsay Urquhart, director of Bespoke; Simon Coles, director of AROS; and Rory Olcayto, AJ deputy editor - commented that architecture does not appear to offer the same rewards and benefits as comparable professions. Niceties like paid overtime are a rarity.

However, winner John Thompson & Partners does offer a comprehensive package of well thought-out employee benefits, including private health insurance, six months paid maternity leave and enhanced paternity leave, as well as an innovative pension scheme. There is a strong commitment to career development, with individual training budgets and an internal management development programme.

The jury also highly commended Hawkins\Brown Architects, noting their sponsorship package for studies, worth up to £2,000 per year for individual employees.
