New Workshop, Allt-an-Duin, Argyll by ECRU Architects
[SMALL PROJECTS 2011] Designed to provide the client with a challenging self build project - the construction of a workshop/store using readily available materials and simple building technologies allowing the client to acquire new skills: drystone walling, lead working and carpentry.
The design extends the traditional batter of the stone walls into the roof section maximising the usable internal area whilst minimising the height, the sloped profile addressing both the prevailing winds and views onto the site. The chamfered ends allow the roof to overhang, providing sheltered areas to the front and back for log storage and outdoor working.
The building is set within the scrub trees, the larch and lead will weather to achieve subtle grey tones complementing the dry stone wall and allowing the building to merge into the landscape.
