Sutherland Hussey Architects: V&A Design Studies

  • Comment

Edinburgh-based Sutherland Hussey Architects’ Tiree Ferry Shelter was shortlisted for the Stirling Prize and the Mies van der Rohe Award in 2003. More recently, the practice has won a number of high-profile projects, including a new city museum in Chengdu, China

A new two-storey loggia is proposed, incorporating vertical circulation to the underground exhibition space and first-floor café while providing clear connections to the existing museum gallery spaces at ground and first-floor levels. An escalator takes visitors directly from the main foyer into the special exhibition space below – a 6m-high, column-free space with the potential for drawing down natural daylight along its side walls.
