Snøhetta: V&A Design Studies

  • Comment

Snøhetta received the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2004 for its Alexandria Library in Egypt. The practice is currently working on the Cultural Centre for the 9/11 memorial site in New York City

Spotlit from above by a large, square frame of lights, the space becomes a blank canvas – a theatrical stage populated by the museum’s visitors. The perfectly horizontal surface of this ‘stage’ compensates for and contrasts with the gentle slope of the yard from Exhibition Road to the V&A building. The visitor descends into an underground exhibition space daylit by punctures in the coffered courtyard ceiling above.
