RIBA Award Winners 2011 – Health

  • Comment

Only five awards for this neglected category and nothing in London

However the quality is outstanding - though also an indicator of where the money is - ranging from the restrained glamour of Foster + Partners’ CircleBath Hospital and Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands’ Teenage Cancer Trust Ward, to the cosy, well-crafted informality of MJP Architects’ Maggie’s Cheltenham and David Sheppard Architects’ Brown’s Dental Practice.

All five demonstrate a mastery of natural lighting; CircleBath, the Cancer Ward and Maggie’s add imaginative colour to these healing environments. A reaffirmation of architecture’s potential to do good in this now troubled sector.

CircleBath Hospital, Foster + Partners

Client Circle/Health Properties Management
Contract value Not disclosed
Citation The abundance and quality of light, and its interplay with materials, textures and colours, creates an environment that is simultaneously confident, luxurious, uplifting, soothing and calm. The clarity of the plan and the simplicity of the section produce an intuitive circulation, making the building easy to navigate and obviating much of the need for signage or maps.

Stratheden Mental Health Unit, Richard Murphy Architects

Client NHS Fife
Contract value £5 million, £1,940/m²
Citation Two single-storey pavilions set within garden grounds cater for individuals with varying levels of neurodegenerative illness. The buildings incorporate 18 bedrooms and 24 bedrooms respectively, all ensuite. Despite significant security requirements, the unit creates comfortable, calming accommodation within light and welcoming environments.

Brown’s Dental Practice, David Sheppard Architects

Client
Lorna and Derek Brown
Contract value Not disclosed
Citation Rough-hewn stone walling and warm birch plywood internal lining are a feast for the senses in this Devon dental practice. In the treatment rooms, frameless glass rooflights capture dappled light falling through the trees. David Sheppard Architects has worked hard to balance the patients’ need for privacy with those of the practitioners, to create airy, light-filled workspaces.

Maggie’s, Cheltenham, MJP Architects

Client
Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres
Contract value £1.6 million, £7,619/m²
Citation The building is crafted with refinement and is sensuously detailed, with edges and junctions meticulously expressed. Colour, material and light have been used to great effect, creating an environment that is robust and tactile, jewel-like and rich. The use of mirrors and visual illusions is both appropriate
and refreshing.

Teenage Cancer Trust Ward, Birmingham Children’s Hospital
Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands

Client Teenage Cancer Trust
Contract value £2.2 million, £5,500/m²
Citation This is a single-storey, lightweight structure perched over an A&E, situated in a busy and chaotic part of Birmingham. But it’s an oasis of peace and calm which meets the very specific and stringent requirements. The attention to detail is quite remarkable. A sad reflection perhaps, but this does not feel like the NHS.
