Manser Medal shortlist announced + Stephen Lawrence prize and Client of the Year shortlists

MVRDV’s cantilevered Balancing Barn is one of six contenders for the £10,000 award for best house or major extension. Stephen Lawrence Prize and Client of the Year shortlists have also been announced

The RIBA has unveiled the shortlist for this year’s Manser Medal:

Intriguingly two rural schemes with large cantilevers, the Balancing Barn, Suffolk by MVRDV with Mole Architects, and Featherstone Young Architects’ Ty-Hedfan, in Brecon, Powys, have been shortlisted for the prize which is awarded to the best individual house or major extension in the UK.

Duggan Morris Architects is also in the running to win the £10,000 award backed by HSBC Private Bank, after being shortlisted for its remodelling of the Brutalist home of architect Graham Stirk in north London.

Eldrige Smerin has also landed a place on the shortlist for the second time in three years with House in Epsom. John Pardey Architects’ Watson House in the New Forest and Adam Richards Architects’ New Mission Hall in West Sussex complete the finalists.

RIBA president Angela Brady said: ‘We all dream of our perfect home. These six clients have commissioned architects to realise that dream, and the results are truly inspiring.’ The winner will be announced on 10 November at the RIBA in London.

Shortlists for the Stephen Lawrence prize for best project under £1 million and Client of the Year have also been announced.

Finalists for 2011 RIBA Stephen Lawrence Prize 

Funded by the Marco Goldschmied Foundation, the prize is given to the best project with a construction budget of less than £1 million.

Finalists for 2011 RIBA Client of the Year Award

  • Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust
  • Land Securities
  • Living Architecture
  • The London Borough of Hackney
  • The Royal Shakespeare Company
  • The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds

The winners will be announced at the Stirling Prize ceremony on1 October at the Magna Science Adventure Centre in Rotherhamre Centre in Rotherham.
